Vision Options

When using maps in a campaign there are several ways for gamemasters to control what portions of maps players can see.

Fog of War

For of war covers the map with “fog” to prevent players from seeing the map.  The gamemaster can gradually expose the map as play advances.  There are a variety of tools to expose different shapes on the map:

  • Rectangle: drag a rectangle

  • Polygon: pick the corners of a polygon shape to expose arbitrary shapes

  • Paintbrush: use a circular brush to remove the fog

Some maps included fog regions that can be used to quickly remove fog from areas that correspond to rooms or encounter areas.  Just click on the map to remove or restore fog to a region.

The revealed portions of a map can also be a handy way to remember what portions of a map have been visited by players.

If you just want to show all of the fog, click the fog tool (eye tool) to remove all of the fog.

Dynamic Lighting

Dynamic lighting allows the map to be revealed based on what areas are visible for each of the characters. Maps that have walls labeled for the maps can be used to show areas that are in line of sight and that are either lighted or that are in darkvision range.  Dynamic lighting options are only available for maps that have dynamic lighting configured.

Dynamic lighting can be used by itself or in conjunction with fog of war.  Using dynamic lighting in conjunction with fog of war allows gamemasters to decide what portions of the map they are “ready” for players to interact and prevent them from moving characters all over the map to reveal the map.  Only areas that are in line of sight and exposed with fog of war, are visible.

The “Draw map while exploring” option simulates drawing lines over the walls of the areas that players have visited.
