Playing a Character

Playing a character in a campaign allows you to fully take advantage of the Shard (virtual) tabletop experience. To join a campaign the gamemaster shares the invite link with the players.

Join Campaign Dialog

This dialog shows when players go to the invite link.

When you go to the invite link you have several options.

  • Join my character to campaign: Click this button if you have already created a character that you would like to use in the campaign. Select the desired character from the list of your characters. Note: if the character is in another campaign they will be moved to this campaign.

  • Create a new character for campaign: Click this button to create a new character. The character will show under your characters and will be joined to the campaign. Characters created in this way have access to all of the content options that are enabled for the campaign, which can include options not normally available in your own account. For example: If the GM has purchased a set of character options for the setting they are using or has created additional options for their homebrew setting, these options will appear as part of the character creation process.

  • Pick a pregenerated character: if you gamemaster has created pregenerated characters for the campaign you can claim one of them to play.

  • Decide later: joins the campaign without a character. You can add or pick a character at a later date. Note: same as close.

Character Card

The card view, seen in My Characters, allows you to see and change the campaign for a character. Click the dropdown to select campaign for the character.

The player view of the campaign shows the character sheet on the left with the map on the right. Note: If you don’t want to see the character sheet at the same time as the map you can uncheck the split screen option.

Your characters and campaigns are available on any device that you choose to use: desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. On narrow devices the character sheet and map are not available at the same time and the view will automatically switch to show one at a time. The buttons at the top allow you to switch between the different views.

List View

In the list view you can see all of the player characters in the campaign. This allows you to switch between characters that you are playing or view details of other player’s characters. The gamemaster can configure the campaign to allow players to see or even change each other’s characters or restrict players to see only their own character. Viewing or changing other’s characters can be a handy way for players to help each other learn how to best play their characters, especially for new players. Note: in the list view you can create, add or claim a pregenerated character.
