How to import a character from D&D Beyond

Import character creates a Shard Tabletop character from a character in D&D Beyond. Additionally, any classes, subclasses, races, backgrounds, spells, items or other dependent types are also added to your account.

Dependent entries like classes, races, backgrounds, etc. are handled in two different ways.

  • Pre-built templates: for many of the commonly used versions of the entries, Shard has fully modeled them into a template library. Based on what your character uses these will be added as a special Imported package. This package can be enabled, disabled or shared just like other packages. We will try to keep these as up-to-date as possible.

  • My Creations: for entries that are not found in the template library, Shard will create partially modeled versions of the entries in your my creations. This would most likely happen with homebrew creations. All of these will show up as edited in your my creations and will also be labeled as imported making it easy for to locate them. You may need to make changes to these to fill in any missing modeling.

All of the entries are located by name. As a result if you have already created entries, your imported characters will use those making it easy for you to mix and match as you like.

How to Import

To import a character, you just need the url to the character from D&D Beyond. This can be easily obtained by viewing you character in D&D Beyond and copying the url from the browser. Click the Import Character button in Shard located on the start page or on the all characters page. Paste the URL and click OK. If you are having problems importing it may be because your character has been marked as private. See our page on how to change your character to allow import.

Note: if you import the same character multiple times then you will have multiple copies in Shard.

Can I Update the Character in D&D Beyond?

Import is a one way process. If you want to make changes in D&D Beyond, you will need to re-import the character when those changes are complete.

While we strive to make the import as complete as possible everything doesn’t translate perfectly and you may need to reapply some of your choices to your character. You may also find that Shard asks you to fill out choices that were missing in D&D Beyond since they don’t point out missing configuration options like Shard does.
