Spellcasting from Items

Following up on last week’s additions to the character sheet, this week brings a number of additional enhancements to modeling for spells and other minor enhancements to the user interface. Each are covered below.

Innate Casting

Innate now allows you to set the level at which the spell is cast. This is particularly useful for features like the Tiefling’s Hellish Rebuke (shown below).

Attach Spells to Items

Rather than just hyperlinking spells in the description of an item, you can now attach a spell list to an item. You can set the minimum level of each spell just like innate casting above. Each spell can use the item’s charges or each spell can be used once a day.

If the spells have individual uses, then they are cast at a fixed level. If you are using charges, the spells can be up-cast by expending additional charges. When multiple spells use charges, the number of charges used for each spell is computed based on the lowest level spell being one and additional charges casting higher level spells based on the level delta between their level and the lowest level spell. For example, if an item using charges can cast a 3rd level spell and a 5th level spell, then casting the 3rd level spell would expend one charge and casting the 5th level spell would expend three charges.

All the spells attached to items that are equipped (and attuned, if required) are shown in the new spellcasting area of the sheet detailed in last Monday’s blog.

We have updated or will soon update the properties for the races and items affected by the new features.

Additional modeling options for Spellcasters

  • half pact and third pact casting to the list of options of casting classes.

  • increasing the effect level of a spellcaster as a feature (could be a feat, custom type, race, or even an item feature). This effects spell slots, available spells, and pact slot levels.

  • adding a spell slot as a feature.

Fog Region Fade

As part of this, we narrowed the faded edge of a fog region to be the equivalent of 6” versus the previous 2’. This should avoid revealing any secrets in the faded edge while still maintaining the soft edge look that is intended.

Smooth Scrolling

The navigation options added to the top of the sheet in last week’s update, now smooth scroll to the appropriate section of the sheet from wherever you are on the sheet.

We hope you like these new capabilities. All feedback welcome. Join us on on Discord, Reddit or Facebook to meet other members of the community and take your game to the next level or follow us on Twitter @shardtabletop for regular updates on what we are doing.

Thanks.
